QLD-Girraween National Park, Castle Rock and Bald Rock CG

Postby Troyk » Sun Jan 06, 2008 8:59 pm

For me this is the mecca of camping in South East Qld. Girraween is a amazing array of granite bolders and rock formations. Girraween is on the NSW / QLd Border between Stanthorpe and Tenterfield.

There are two campgrounds at Girraween, Bald Rock and Castle Rock.

Castle Rock is an open camground with a few trees while Bald Rock is set amongst the trees and is more suitable for camper trailers and caravans.

Facilities include toilets, showers (though there have been restrictions in recent times), bbqs (need to bring own wood) and tables. You need to take your rubbish with you and there are a few waste transfer stations in the nearby towns. There is a telephone near the rangers office as you lose mobile reception about 5km before the grounds.

Sorry I don't have many photos of the grounds, but I will post photos of the park and you will see why I rate it so highly.

Details can be found at http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forests/find_a_park_or_forest/girraween_national_park/

There is a new Caravan Park near Storm King Dam, which is about 10km away. The Link http://www.sommervillevalley.com.au/home.html

The photos are around Castle Rock Campground.

The old camp oven in the frying pan I see. I wonder how many people I have converted to them over the years.

I gave a cooking demonstration to a group of motor home owners once. These were big motor homes as well, Winnebago's up around the $300,000 to $400,000 mark. Anyway when I finished I heard one lady telling her husband "he could pull the oven out of the damned thing" as she was off the garage sales to find a frying pan and a camp oven. :*** :*** :*** :***

Also did a demo for the opening of the Cannon Hill 4BC studios a couple of years ago when these two elderly ladies walked up. Now by my reckoning they were themselves possibly in their eighties. One of them said to the other, "Look dear an old camp oven. Haven't seen one of them since Grandma was alive." :*** :*** :*** :***

The hardest part of all was finding an old Electric Frypan that would accommodate the size of the C/Oven and also still work on electricity.

Looked high and low in the various 2nd hand shops and found one approx 2mins from our house.

But I've never used it on electricity & have carted the cord around for many a mile.

Do these look familiar?

they are pics of your demo I took one day.. long ago...

That was at the Ausfish M&G at Bribie Island. I remember Les invited you guys from the Toyota Surf Forum.

The meat was a round of lamb with a fair sprinkling of rosemary. I also cooked a batch of muffins and a chocolate black forest pudding. :***
