CYT Handbrake help please

Postby Bill snd Morag » Mon Mar 02, 2009 10:08 am

We bought this kit to install on our Cape York.

I mounted the ratchet handle and ran the cables very easily
And then the trouble started
Here are pictures of our backing plate where I had hoped to connect the cable.

Now when I twist the lever coming out of the backing plate the brakes come on.
Unfortunatly when I let go of the lever the brakes stay on
It seems there is a spring missing to pull the brakes off?
Either that or I need a different kit.
CYT customer service is absolute crap and they will not help. They just said bring it in and we will put the handbrake on for x amount of $$ <-- (read way to much $$)
Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome.
Thank you

yes, drum brakes usually have a spring to release them after you let go of the brake (cable). Is there something else around the other side of the axle (out of picture) that a spring might be anchored too?

No sir there isnt.
A friend told me the spring in on the inside of the drum.
Unfortunatly my mechanical skills dont extend far enough for me to confidently pull them off.
I will just have to call around and find someone to fit it for me.
Thank you for your help...

Jack up and take your wheel off then tap the drum off. usually it is only the wheel studs that hold the drum on and it should come off relatively easy. Inside you will see the assembly. There should be either two or four springs. Pull the brake on and off and you will soon see how it works. Sounds like the springs have been removed.

yeah its a very basic operation to pull the drums off, something will may have to do at some stage to do adjustment once the handbrake is installed anyway. Give it a go, if unsure take lots of pictures as you pull it apart so you can remember how it all goes back together.

I have a mate that is an automotive mechanic coming over this weekend to help me out with it.
I will take plenty of pictures and keep them on my spare hard drive just in case I need them sometime.
He reckons there is nothing wrong with the brakes. He says I' am probably just not moving the lever far enough to actually move the brakes. HE said there will be a bit of play in the lever and reckons that is what Iam feeling.
We will see.
Thanks to everyone for all your help and suggestions...
