Building a Tear Drop Camper

Postby Woodsy » Sat Dec 04, 2010 10:45 pm

Wow the new Site looks Good! I have been playing with the idea of building a teardrop camper as we are abit over putting up our huge tent and tarp etc, we would rather have more time to relax. So i have been looking into light weight teardrop style campers. Can build one from a trailer frame using plywood. An area big enough to have a queen size bed and a kitchen area, with a cover off the side so we still have shade to sit in. This would be built on a budget and if there was any interest i might build more to sell at a good price for those who cant afford to buy a top of the line one.

I dont think it would be overly hard to do, or expensive, the most expensive part would be the plywood. It would be small enough to tow behind any car. Have any of you done this before?

Something similar to this without the metal skin.

HA i wish, going to start plans for it but i am in 2 frames of mind. I could either build one from scratch or build one to mount on my 6x4 trailer to utilise the space in the trailer itself. Which would mean only having to pay for one trailer rego a year instead of 2, so when i wasn't using it as a camper i could take the camping body off and use it as a normal trailer. Would lose the teardrop shape though...

yeah the Government doesn't need any more money, they've got heaps.

How about a camper trailer type thing on your existing trailer? Or will it be more of a permanent box type thing for ease of set up at camp?

Yep i've got a big list of camper trailer plan sites, some of them work out cheaper to buy one complete, and some are dirt cheap.

If i stick a camper body ontop of my current trailer the frame will be made from steel and the rest from timber, i dont really want to go down the nylon route with a fold out camper, would rather have one thats ready to go.
