Have you had anything stolen from camp?

Postby shell68 » Tue Aug 26, 2008 8:20 am

Hi, during my insomnia last night I started to panic!

Do people come in your tent and take things?

I will obviously have the camera etc with me or in locked car, but do people come into your tent and take airbeds or into your camping area and take gas bottle or stove etc? Being a first time camper (going in October to caravan park) all our stuff will be new. It won't be expensive gear, but new.

Have you had anything stolen from your camping site? If so what? Also tips would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Never had anything stolen. Most of my camping has been in National Parks etc and I believe it less likely to happen there. This could be because I try to time my camps when very few people will be around. In Caravan parks the chances are more likely but as long as you dont leave things lying around and valuables such as cameras, computers locked in car you will most likely be fine

I have been very fortunate in all my years of camping to never have had anything stolen. Campers on the whole are a great bunch of people and tend to look out for one another. Just use your common sense and take your valuables like wallets, cameras, mobiles etc. with you when you leave camp, and you should be fine.
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt - then it's bloody hilarious!

mostly it wont be people you are camping with that steal the items, it will be local "walk throughs" that came and have a look. Mostly other campers keep an eye out for one and other, and to date ive never had anything stolen. But as its been said above, i stay away from large popular parks during the busy times when this would be most likley to happen.

Nope.

Of course it 'could' happen. But generally it doesn't. You 'could' get hit by a meteor sitting at your computer right now, but there's not point stressing about it. Same with stealing camp stuff

Just do what you said, camera's, wallets etc in the car.

It was friend's of our that had their mountain bikes stolen
from a cp as said above it was done by locals walking through
the park not by fellow camper's

Never had any thing stollen.

There is another thread on this I believe.
Im more scared of drop bears & bunyips than having something stollen from my camp.

Like the others said the dSLR and the P'n'S cameras go in the car. Phones we keep on us if in reception and we need them. Jewellery wallets etc go in the car in a bag in the back out of site. Other than that they are probably most likely to knock off the fridge and thats never happened so I'm happy. Again I camp in national and state parks mostly and never camp in caravan parks or anything (i'll stay in a cheap motel before I'll stay in a van park).

The only things I really heard of getting stollen is expencive stuff and eskies (normally full of booze)

I have not ever had anything stolen but have often heard of others that have been less fortunate.

I think it is a case of putting items are are easily carried out in places that are more difficult to access like the car and out of sight.

I've never had anything stolen either and we were on the road traveling for a year. It's a very rare thing for another camper to steal your stuff more than most it's walk throughs or visitors. But as been said before just dont leave stuff out in sight or tempation and you should be right. Out of sight out of mind i work on.

Is refreshing to hear not that much goes missing from our campsites :+

Only thing I've had go missing was some dry firewood one damp weekend, but nothing serious.

I had some "so called friends" destroy my 3 man hike tent back in the late '70's. Easy to do - one hand on the top of the pole to support it and yank the middle of the pole with the other hand.
Cheers,
