Where to camp????

Postby lalac » Sat Sep 18, 2010 1:47 pm

Hi everyone, new to the forum and hoping some experienced campers can give us some advice about good places to go.

We are from NZ and have ben living in Sydney for 18 months. This summer we have decided to go camping (tent camping) for 2 weeks but we are really not sure where to go.

The campers will be myself, the man and our 11 year old daughter. We have a 4WD so would like to be able to use it a little bit. Travelling is not really a problem but ideally we would like to go somewhere in NSW or lower-mid QLD. Also, swimming is a must and also near a beach would be ideal as we love the beach, and the man likes to surfcast a bit. Also, we would like to camp near other people, so maybe we can make some camp mates and our daughter will find some other kids to play with, but at the same time we don't want to go somewhere that is ridiculously busy.

Initially we thought we might go to Fraser Island for 6 nights. Obviously we would stop at a couple of places on the way up for a couple of nights each, and then the same on the way back but we feel it may be too busy at Fraser Island for what we want at the time of year we are going???

The time would be perhaps the 2 weeks immediately after Xmas.

Any advice and helpful tips would be fantastic - also some advice about equipment needs - aside from the really obvious would be really appreciated. We have been camping before but always with my family who have everything so we have never had to worry about getting our own gear sorted. I have a massive list but you never know what you may forget!

Thanks in advance!

Hi lalac....WELCOME to the forum. My immediate advice is to spend some time going back though the forum and looking at the older threads.....much of what you seek has been discussed several times and there is a lot of info within the folders here.

Yes there is a bit of reading to do....AND a lot of great info to be found...... You'll then be able to come back to us with more specific ideas on what you want advice about.

Melaleuca backpackers was highly recommended by my daughter and her dad and his friends enjoyed it too I believe. It was mentioned in a post somewhere last summer, so if you do a search you should be able to find it. Apparantly they screen their campers somewhat, don't allow big groups and they guarantee lots of space for campers.

As for what to take, I love talking about camping gear! I'm sure checklists have been posted here too, but apart from the obvioius, everyone has their own extras they cannot do without.

Some of mine are: gaffa tape (saved me from being eaten alive by mozzies when I ripped my flyscreen tent door, also fixed numerous holes in the floor with it), those facial wipes (can't remember the brand, they have cucumber in them!), and paper towel and paper plates and cups. Always good to cut down on the dishes when on holiday and good for starting the fire.

As you have a 4wd, I would suggest some of the following:

- Rainbow Beach, QLD
- Fraser Island, QLD

Hi Lalac :hello:

If you’re thinking of heading up to Queensland there are some great beachside campsites in and around the Sunshine Coast you should check out.

Double Island Point is one of my favourite beach camping spots and great for 4WD. It’s located just south of Rainbow Beach and you can drive up to it along the beach from Noosa North Shore. There is also Freshwater campground just off the beach about 8km south of Double Island or there is Inskip Point further north.

Noosa North Shore Retreat has a great family campsite although it’s not located right on the beach (it took us about 20 minutes to walk it). Its great for the kids with a games room and swimming pool and you can drive your 4WD right onto the beach. It’s also in a fantastic location if you want to head into Noosa for the day or if you want to do daytrips such as Australia Zoo, The Eumundi markets, underwater world, Rainbow Beach or even Fraser Island.

Fraser Island will be busy around the Christmas period but if you’re looking to camp by the beach then you’ll find it’s fairly busy wherever you go around that time.

For a more central location Coolum Beach and Cotton Tree Caravan Parks are both fantastic beachside campsites on the Sunshine Coast however neither of these requires 4WD.

Hope this help with a few ideas.

Have fun!

Hi Lalac,
Anne and I have found Bungalung National Park to be worth a look about that time of year. Either Sandon River or Red Rock Camping Grounds, both on the coast near Brooms Head, turn off the highway at Maclean just past Grafton when heading north and head East. We have a teenage son and with fishing, surfing, swimming etc. we were all well catered for. If you want more creature comforts Brooms Head Caravan Park is between the two National Park Camping Grounds without the huge crowds of places closer to Brisbane ie Ballina, Byron Bay, Gold and Sunshine Coasts. ;) Hope this helps, Happy Camping Anne & Ed.
