Emu Family

Postby Troyk » Mon Oct 01, 2007 11:45 am

Came across this Emu Family just south of Blackall, in Central Qld.

I remember reading somewhere that its the Father thats looks after the eggs and chicks.

The first three shots are stills from the video at the bottom, which is 4Mb in size. If the video doesn't work please tell me.

Worked alright for me.

When we drove from Perth to HB we spotted a flock of emu's on the Hwy between Bourke and St. George. They were up ahead crossing the road, first to go was mum emu, then the chicks and lastly dad. I was amazed at how he just waited until all the chicks crossed and then he went.

I have come across a family on several occasions over a few years at the Grampians, always in the same area. They are always only with one parent and I do believe it's Dad. Judging by the size of the chicks in the photo's, they either grow quickly or hand around for a while. Scott.

They aren't the best eating birds but I suppose if you are hungry enough.
