Hi all we are about to trek from melb to darwin then down to perth towing our camper with a motorbike on the draw bar and we are thinking about trading in our ve commodore v8 as we think it just isnt the right vehicle for the job it is on gas injection and we are getting 320k's to the tank and about $40 to fill we are sticking to the main roads but fear that allot of places that we will want to visit will be down dirt roads, can anyone help me out on what some of the turbo diesel 4X4's are getting towing campers ie, pajero, landrcruser, prado, hilux, navara, patrol, just to name a few thanks ash.

Hi, Ash,

You could try reducing the size of your photos a bit to make them more PC-friendly.

We have a Prado 2005, V6 (petrol). It comes with a standard 180 L tank. I would expect to get at least 900km on a full tank with that sort of load.

We have a 2.5ltr TD5 (5 cylinder) slightly modified Diesel Land Rover Discovery, 110ltr fuel tank, we tow a 1.4t camper, we average 10l/100 around town and 13l/100 towing the camper, basically 800ks for around 105ltrs used.

I wouldn't be swaping a car over just for a single trip... you'll loose more in changing over than whatever petrol you will use. So, is it something you want to do long term... if so then any of the TD's will get good fuel consumption towing that as long as you keep to reasonable speeds. Sit on 130km/h in the NT and they'll drink too!

Hi Ash1980,,,We have a 4500 petrol/lpg Auto Nissan Patrol and tow our camp trailer.
As a rule, we seldom use petrol, other than to start her on cold mornings and give it the odd 10....15km every now & then to give the petrol a run (infact, she goes far better on LPG).
We get approx 400km to the 80ltr LPG (100ltr tank,,,80% full)....petrol we get far better milage but when it comes to 'full-up' time at the servo's....LPG leaves petrol for dead....infact, I wouldn't recommend Auto Patrol 4500 on petrol.....great wagon but pretty greedy on the fuel....manual is cheaper if you do go Patrols....Nothing will beat them off road.(Avis won't drive manuals....so I had to get an Auto)

Now, thats great especially when we go off road.......otherwise we enjoy pulling the trailer behind our campervan.....this means we can take all the stuff we 'need' in the van....and all the stuff we ''want'' in the trailer,,,,Excellent for stopping for a cuppa or one night stays...pack up & off again.

One more thing to consider ,if you do go LPG, it can get abit scarey wondering how far to the next servo that sells LPG out in the backblocks.....and your needles heading backwards.
Sounds like you guys are in for a great trip.....enjoy

Cheers
