I couldn't be bothered. Partly because it's yet another thing too lug around and partly because I sit in front of one all day normally!

The little laptop is the music machine and the games machine and plays our DVDs; never have bothered with the net when on holidays.

See I even prefer no music and definitely no DVDs when camping. I can tolerate my friends playing music (just , but I wouldn't be very happy if they'd be watching DVDs instead of having a chinwag by the campfire.

Yup, laptop with 3g card and TV tuner. Use it in the morning when having breakfast and after dinner. We find it very useful when we just drive and stop somewhere unplanned to check out the potential accomodation etc.

Once, and once only so far and that's only because we were camping at an actual caravan park, no point taking a laptop if there's no power  Our phones usually get turned off for the duration of the trip, because where we go there's no reception.

We use the phones occasionally to check the time as it's our only clock. My friends and I have regular "guess the time" competitions. Whoever has the closest guess gets a prize. Which is usually something you really would've rather not wanted like "you get to do a tribal dance around the camp" or something equally silly. :beer

I take a netbook to watch DVDs, TV shows I've recorded, itinerary planning (I have topographical maps loaded), research (when I can get Internet access via NextG), uploading photos to the Internet for my family and friends, the odd Facebook update etc. I do a lot of solo trips so it's something nice to have (not a must have) at night for a couple of hours after dark. On a cold night I'll read a book in my sleeping bag under the light of an itty bitty booklight lol

Going for a year plus, we will need them for the boys schooling (we homeschool). Also hubby and I will also want one to share to track our trip and look for the next spot to stop.

Im trying to find a map online or program so the boys can chart thier trip, and also perhaps one that allows them to have an online diary attached to each place we stop...any ideas?

Im sure we will end up with four laptops between us all....so that theres no fights! I plan to take almost no school books so all work will be via the net. Im banning games though much to thier disgust!

There is Ozi Explorer for mapping and plotting trips but I do not know if it has the diary facility.

I'm fairly sure Ozi Explorer doesn't have a diary function as you have described. What you could do with Ozi is set a waypoint for places of interest, like overnight stops or even interesting things on the side of the road. The waypoints can then be displayed on the map.

What would be really cool would be to 'join' the waypoints and display a route line - which is fairly simple to do.
