If you have a hire car, you may find some great spots down the southern end of the coast. Away from the hussle and bustle of Surfers but still clsoe to a lot of things.

Places such as Burleigh, Palm Beach, Currumbin, Nobbys, Mermaid beach.

Still all those places are only 20 minutes from the Gold Coast Hinterland which in my opinion is the best places of the Goldie. I grew up in Mudgeeraba/Tallai. Top Spot

Depends what your after mate. Palm Beach Surf Club do good 'pub' type meals with an outlook over the ocean (as all good surf clubs do :D )

Burleigh has a few nice places around,

If you stay up at Mermaid Beach its only 5 minutes north to broadbeach that has HEAPS of places to eat.

have a look in here - http://www.verygoldcoast.com.au/

plenty of links off that page for places to go, things to see and eat etc.

Cheers

Well after all this most Valued input, we are not going to Queensland.
Victoria/NSW border won out in the cost factor.
I had not realised until tonight that Von has never explored the Echuca area, so paddle steaming we go.
Very much appreciate all the suggestions tho, even Rosco,s private rude ones :*** :*** :***

Looove that part of the world Titch.....Echuca & surrounds I mean..

Look forward to seeing your report and pics....

Just a word of caution....DO NOT stay at the Riverlander CP just out of Echuca as it's a bogan ridden place.....not very nice at all.

Their website is very devious as it's nothing like the photos at all and full of permanents, not to mention the second amentities block attached to the non powered camping sites(dusty back paddock!!)....its a damn tin shed ewww, the kids had to use the loo before we left and they were disgusted. We couldn't even stay there one night just drove in,kids used the amenities turned around got our money back and left in a cloud of dust!!!! :x

It was also the 30th Dec so finding somewhere in Echuca was like a needle in a haystack but we ended up staying in Tongala which was a lovely little village and the CP there was lovely, amenities were a little old but worked fine(but they were about to start doing them up) and were spotless, the camp kitchen is unreal and the owners are real characters and have been doing the CP up over the last couple of years. I have attached their website just in case your interested. Also noticed that they have put in some kids playground stuff. And also they have a deer park right next door. Quite a gorgeous CP and Tongala makes 24% of Australia's milk....just a weird fact that stuck in my head!!! :cheers

For what it's worth I just got back from the Sunshine Coast where I spent 10 days.
Did the trip south for Dreamworld...shouldn't have bothered...I was last there in 1995...it was better then!
As for the Sunshine Coast, Underwater World hasn't changed in 20 years...and the wharf where it is located is a ghost town...falling apart at the seams...
Australia Zoo was very good...
Mooloolaba beach awesome...but you don't want beach...
Noosa same as ever...

I would suggest a couple of days on the Sunshine Coast and the rest Gold Coast...
Enjoy!!
