Speaking on camp oven cooking Derek, how many heat beads top and bottom would you recommend for a cast iron camp oven (9qt) to cook a pork roast about 2kg in size??

I will do the Thommo in the frypan trick.

Cheers Gypsy

For pork as you may already know, needs lots of heat at the start to set the crackling.

I would put about 20 on top and 9 underneath to get it really hot for the crackling then maybe take a few off the top after half an hour or so.

One thing I always do is light more Heat Beads® than I need so that I can always add more. It's easy to take a few off if it's to hot but hard to get more heat if you don't have them.

I did a very nice pork loin roll at Christmas and it turned out a treat. In fact one of my favorite roasts in an oven is pork followed by lamb.

Thanks Derek, I was way off the mark, I was aiming at 15 top and 10 bottom. And yes I agree with you re the pork but as far as the lamb is concerned you can have that all to yourself. I am affraid I let the country down big time with that one, even the smell of it cooking turns my stomach.

I have a Weber electronic thermometer so there is never a chance of over cooking it.

We are going to have roast pork one evening in the camp oven and corn meat etc in the Dream Pot on another evening. Nothing else planned at this point, think I will just fill the freezer and decide on the day what I feel like cooking that evening.

Mum is coming with me and she is the difficult one, so many things she won't even try, just says, no I don't like that..... And at 76 it is a bit difficult to argue with her and definitely not worth the effort.....

Thanks again Derek....You know it is sooo good having our very own resident camp oven cook on board.

Thanks Derek.

Cheers....

I am all organised to go with the camp oven already in the car.

Originally I said I would have room if someone wanted to come with me but that's changed as I am now intending to travel to Gympie after lunch.

Will be cooking plain as well as sultana scones.

As I don't know anyone where will we be meeting at the BP. Any particular spot.
