QLD - Kenilworth Homestead

QLD - Kenilworth Homestead

Postby Troyk » Sun Mar 09, 2008 6:21 pm

We did a recon to kenilworth Homestead yesterday. Its located just to the north east of the town of kenilworth, and is on the banks of the Mary River. From the road there is short drive along a dirt road until you come to what is best described as a roundabout with a series of building located around it, including the office and dining and group accomodation.

Its a nice spot, but I beleive you need to be self sufficient, as there is only one amentity block and can be a fair distance away from where you would camp.

The office (which was closed when we were there)

Some shots of the homestead from the office.

This a paddock near the office, but I don't know if you can camp here, as it had no signs of previous occupation.

The other end of the paddock back towards the buildings

Their is an amentities block located the office

Near the amentities there was a firepit and bbq's.

Ok this is the first camping area. It has a power pole if required.

Camping along the river (one way to get this area requires a 4wd)

Area down near the end, they were having a musical festival down there.

Well the ammenities are a bit (ok, a lot!!) dingier than I remembered but I know it is nice to camp there! Nice and grassy with the 'locals' scattered around!
Thanks for the pics troyk

Thanks for the report and pcis Troy and yes the amenities block did look pretty dingy and rather grotty.

Yes it is nice and green and the river is looking quite good. The slide is looking very different from the pics I have seen of it, looks somewhat derelict.

It's a shame really and whilst I personally don't believe you have to have a campground that looks like a resort for a gathering it seems like the general consensus is that they want more than KH has to offer.

To me it is not so much about the destination as it is about the people.

Thanks again Troy.

Cheers.....

Apart from the run down facilities, it looks like a really nice spot for those of us who are self contained

I'd like to see the grass a little shorter.

Oh it could definitely use some attention in the grass department, and if you have toilets and showers, why not keep them clean and tidy? Kind of what put us off going back to Landcruiser park

The hoons are what put me off from going back to LCMP. The language, the noise and overall rude behaviour of them just got to be too over the top. It is no longer a family destination IMO.

Used to love the pig pen, have some great video from there.

gypsy i dont think the group is trying to find places that look like a resort, they are just trying to accomodate those that are new to camping & ones that arnt self sufficent yet. buy doing this it helps everyone get to know oneanother & see each others camp set up.

thank you troy for the pics & a great review.

Thanks Troy and everyone who went up there. hmmmm the toilet block is a bit on the down side for sure and being so far from the camping area too. I think i'll give this place a miss too. I dont think it would suit us with my grandson as it's a bit far for him to go.

In following up the amentities were fairly clean they just needed a good coat of paint. The length of the grass was more the fact the area has had good rain in recent times.

OK then Troy ,with a fresh coat of paint they might look cleaner
A little maintenance there would go a long way , it looks like it could take a few campers and camping fees so some improvements wouldn't go a stray in the amenities department .
