I imagine Troy that would depend upon whether or not you want to travel the new or the old Strzelecki. Reputation has it that the new is the better road but I imagine that would depend on what weather conditions we have between now and June next year.

The road from the Strzelecki to Cameron Corner past Merty Merty consists of some 100 + sand dunes.

Are you considering travelling from Cameron Corner to Tibooburra and then back up through the Warri gate??

Just got the below comments from Westprint Maps. I imagine it will be considerably different by June 2009 though.

The road from the Strzelecki across to Cameron Corner is being worked on, and the parts they’ve finished are excellent. Still a few bulldust holes, particularly near crests, on the remaining bits

As Gypsy says the road to Cameron's Corner is over sand dunes they are capped with clay and so easy enough in 2 wheel drive. The old Strezleki is basically ok but has sections of sand although not deep need some care. The new Strezleki is about 50 metres wide and was in good nick when we went over it. it was mainly good dirt and some parts with corrugations but again easily traversed by 2 wheel drive. From Cameron's Corner to Tibuburra is is also a fairly easy run. We came into Tibooburra from White Cliffs and that road is also good dirt with some parts corrugated.
If you stick to the main roads and travel between settlements you don't really need survival gear as there is a surprising amount of traffic out there especially in Winter.

Just checked whent he school holidays occur.

QLD : 27 June - 12 July
NSW : 11 July to 26 July

So there is no overlap if we are trying to accomdate both states. Of course this is only a problem for those with school age kids :)

I am starting tp put together a program so at this stage I will start it on 27 June. I might also do it in Google Earth, showing path etc, and we can add to it as we go and include details such as petrol station location, things to see etc.

Cheers

If you have members who require unleaded fuel at Cameron Corner Troy, you should ring ahead and make sure they have some. They normally only carry diesel although in the colder months (and school holidays) when most people travel they might have it.

Best to check though.

I'm thinking along similar lines - although my car isn't "small' it is only 2WD.

Sounds like a wonderful trip though - I'm sure everyone will have a great time.
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt - then it's bloody hilarious!

I must admit ladies that I would only do it in a 4WD myself, especially after having been out that way before.

All those dunes between the Strzelecki and Cameron Corner would certainly make it hard work for any little car and I think you said you have a little Getz PJ, did you not??

There have been plenty of Subarus do it and they are not the biggest car about.

I have not ruled out doing it myself at this stage but if my plans come off I will have already been out and back by that time. I hope to take 5 weeks in about April-May or even June to do my outback trip. I also plan on traveling further south in that time as well and thought that I might even meet up with these guys coming back.

Time will tell, you know what they say about the 'best laid plans'.....

PJ and Amanda, keep an eye if you are interested, perhaps someone with a 4WD might come along and needs passengers! :o
