I asked this question a couple of weeks back but didn't get a response, so I'll try again. Does anyone know of any good camping areas in the Newcastle - Port Macquarie region. I have only ever visited the area very briefly and have a very limited knowledge of the area. Any suggestions happily taken, thanks.

I can't believe I missed an opportunity to plug this place :armsup : viewtopic.php?t=335

Or if you have a 4x4 there is stockton beach right next to Newy. There are heaps of camping grounds/areas all around newy actually, especially along the coastline.

:+ Thanks for that - I had been told that the Hawks Nest area was good, and after reading your review it sounds like just the sort of place we're after.

Watagans

Postby Gary's Family » Thu Aug 03, 2006 3:44 pm

Have you tried the Watagans? We have been going up there for about 25yrs years and still enjoy it. You do occasionally get some noise, but it's easy enough to find a quiet spot in the stae forest somewhere. The beauty about the Watagans is if you camp in the State forest it is free, and you can have a good fire.

Watagans

It is south west of Newcastle. Theres a few ways into the mountains. You can get a state forest map of newcastle region from info centres. Probably the best way in is through Cooranbong, which is near Morrisett.

South west rocks

Another nice spot is Trail bay, which is in through Sth West rocks. You can camp right on the beach. Another place we like to go is Kylies beach (Crowdy Bay National Park), which is accessed through Laurieton off the Pacific Highway at Kew.

I have seen some awesome 4WD photos of the Watagans would love to get the hunjy down there one day but with fuel at $1.36/L and the hunjy drinks it at 18-20L/100K I won't be down there for a while :(

Ahh I feel better now I have had my rant for the day!
