Any advice when selecting campervans??????

Postby Outdoor Adventurers! » Wed Sep 26, 2007 4:49 pm

Hi everyone, we're long time bush campers but now with two small children we're over the whole setting up the massive tent thing! Hence, we're looking at buying a campervan (on-road) so we can still have the feel of tenting it but with more conveniences & we'd really appreciated any advice before we spend the dosh! We're looking to spend approx $5000 & we've been investigating a Jayco Finch/Sunwagon or similar but I don't know much about them. What do we need to look out for when buying secondhand? Are they Jayco's & Sunwagon's as good as eachother? etc? etc? We'd be towing it with a new toyota camry 4cyl (2.4lt eng) so given that they are fairly lightweight & not much wind resistence with think these type of campervans would suit.

All types have their adherents. It's picking whats right for you.

You need to see as many as you can.

Before we brought we visited the camping and caravan expos to compare the set ups before settling on our Cub Hard Floor.

Towed this around Australia with a 2.6litre 4 cyclinder car with no problems.

With a budget you may have to go second hand, if so make sure you put the thing all the way up and make sure the canvas is sound and the fridge, electrics work

Then off and enjoy

Hi, we have been looking at the campervans and trailers also, we have not decided on any particular one yet, we have been to camping shows & expos and checking reviews and magazines. They all have different pros and cons, make a list of the things you want and dont want the camper van/trailer to have, asking others campers is also great, good luck and happy camnping.

I will be in the market for a campervan in a couple of months time (end of Oct 08) and would appreciate any advice. We are looking at Toyota Coasters or something of similar size to not be bothered with packing up the bed every day. We have a budget of around $12k.

It seems that the only decent listings are to be found in the trading post and ebay. Are there any other useful sites around?

I'm guessing that from a fuel perspective that if we're planning extended travelling, diesel or LPG would be far preferable over petrol.

Still early on in the research so any advice appreciated!

A couple of websites to try could be carpoint, carsales and carsguide.
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt - then it's bloody hilarious!

For clarity it's best to call Jayco Finch/Dove/Hawk/Swan/whatevers as wind-up campers. Trailers with tents that unfold camper-trailers (with distinctions between hard and soft floor). Coasters and similar 'buses' tend to be campervans.

We have a wind-up camper (Goldstream ) which are about $35K new. Slightly cheaper 2nd hand as they keep their value quite well.

If you're looking at an older wind-up, check the canvas and mechanical aspects (winding winch/cables, brakes, chassis inc drawbar for signs of rust, tyres and wheel bearings). You want to find a structurely sound one rather than a cosmetically good one IMO. You can always 'tart' it up yourself with a little bit of time and effort. Look at as many as you can as you might luck onto a good one. It's the sort of thing that gets bought then not used (like a boat) so as long as it's been stored ok you might get yourself a bargain.

For the Coaster buyer... once again. mechanical reliability is the most important aspect. Regarding deisel vs petrol/lpg, do your research well. LPG will probably be the cheapest (even using more as you would) but your range will be reduced. That wouldn't be a problem pottering around the East coast, but might be an issue going "outback"
