What's the rule when there is no toilet?

Postby jro406 » Sat Sep 13, 2008 10:27 pm

Hi, I'm relatively new in camping and we love it. So far we've always tried to go to places with public toilets in the areas (some even "flush", others the "long drop").

My question is that what is the regulation in regards to if there is no toilet? Are we legally allowed to dig a hole in the ground and bury it when we've finished? I've tried searching for info in a couple of sites (incl. National Park websites) but couldn't find it (probably missed it?).

Info would be appreciated, information on info sources would even be better.

Thanks very much in advance,
Jon

not sure of the official laws but generally it's something like 50-100m from a watercourse (wet or dry... it might rain one day!), bury the waste (dig a decent hole, not just scratch the leaves away) and burn the tickets (paper).

Alternatively, if you were static camping you could dig your own latrine.

And then there is the option of a porta pottie too. They are a lot less expensive these days and much easier to maintain.

A friend of mine is a horticulturalist and also a camper,he told me it is the best fertilizer BUT you must dilute it to breaK it down, and of course if you were camping you`d want to tip it out a looooonnngg way away from people and rivers.

National Parks and Wildlife ask that you be at least 100 metres from a water course and you bury it at least 150 deep

Hi,
This is my first response to a post. I have been looking at the website for a few weeks now and thought i would get a bit more into it.

Actually ther is a rule. For primary treatment (or none), you need to be more than 50 meteres from a watercourse. I am in this field of work. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have seen them in Aldi for the same price and a friend of mine bought the Aldi one and is so far very happy with it.

Sorry if sounds nieve.
But how do you clean the porta potty?
Does it empty and you give a quick scrub or do really have to get in there?

They all come with a cassette now and you just turn the nozzle around and empty it out, not at all messy unless you make an issue of it.

I have my own mix that I make up but if want to buy one then I recommend BioMagic and it breaks down the solids and you end up with 'black' water.

From there I just give it a good rinse.

Always check behind the tree BEFORE you squat!

that is a big bear! lol!

On a side note, if you camp near a long drop, check for redback spiders before mounting the throne...
