New members.... want to camp with 2 kids and 2 dogs

Postby kylieandaaron » Wed Oct 22, 2008 7:22 pm

:P Hi everyone, we just bought our first big tent today, an Oztrail 15 x 12 cabin tent. (Any tips on this tent would be most welcome.... do we need a tarp? How big etc). We have a couple of 10 y/o Border Collies and two young boys and would love to camp together on weekends. I'm more of a glamour camper than a bushwacker.... need electricity for the hairdryer and clean toilets/hot showers. Happy to spend half an hour putting up the tent and then sitting back for two hours with a couple of bottles of wine and celebrating the achievement.

I am completely naive on all things camping, happy to have a go and enjoy a relaxing holiday. Can anyone tell me if you can take your own port-a-potty to caravan park campgrounds? Also, are there any campgrounds on the NSW coast that take dogs over Christmas?
Look forward to learning from everyone here. Kylie

Hi kylieandaaron and WELCOME to the forum. Whilst I personally cannot help you in that location with pet friendly venues I know there are other members who can.

I can suggest that you have a look in the Aust Park Reviews on this forum where you will find a wealth of info.

I never camp without my canine kids and am happy to see more people out there camping with ALL the family.

In order not to upset fellow campers without pets may I suggest that you follow the camp rules in relation to the canine family and all will go well for you. I have never had an issue of any description when camping with my 'girls' and attribute it to following that one recommendation.

I also recommend that you make sure the canine family are catered for by providing them with tick protection and bedding that they are familar with. Also toys if they are so inclined and of course their usual food and water bowls.

Glad to see you here.

BTW I did forget to mention....YES you definitely need a tarp and a bigger one than your tent so that you can set your kitchen or sitting area up under cover. Cover for the canine kids as well.

Buy a good quality one, one with D rings and two brands that come to mind are Ultrarig and Durarig.

Cheers Gypsy....

G'day kylieandaaron. :armsup

We have a fur baby as well, and when we go camping she stays home and guards the bloody house! :cheers

Don't know about the porta potty. I would take a punt that you will probalby get a no from the caravan park.

If you are worried about quality of facilites, have a look at the NRMA site accomdation guide. They usually give a star rating for caravan parks like they do for hotels. May not be an accurate rating but could be guide. Will also tell you if you can take the dogs.

Anyhow good luck with it all as I am sure you and the family will enjoy it! 8)

Hi
another newbie here
We travel (caravan) with two very pampered dogs plus three birds. Recently travelled from Brisbane to Eden and back. There are numerous parks along the coast which will welcome your dogs, and our experience is that many of them will take dogs during peak periods. However you will need to ring before arriving to check with each individual park, as attitudes can change from week to week. Over peak periods you will probably need to book well in advance and be prepared to pay some pretty high rates.
Portapotti should not be a problem anywhere as we like many other caravanners have one and have never had any problems. Just remember that they cannot be emptied into a septic system. Check for dump points as a number of parks as well as many towns now provide specialised dump points.
Just remember to follow the rules for dogs in each park (usually on leash at all times) and to cleanup after your dog. It only takes one careless owner to spoil things for everyone.
As a Queenslander I must say that NSW both north and south coast have some of the most beautiful beaches and spectacular coastline anywhere.
Happy camping

Hi Kylie,
I too am sooo like you with being a glamour camper myself. I only started camping again about three years ago and that was because my girlfriend and her hubby got us back into it after not having camped since I was a kid. Im still getting over the barney's Mum n Dad had putting up that damn tent. :$
Us girls would go out early Friday morning while our hubby's were still at work and we had the day off and start setting up. After about 3 camping trips to Wyangala Dam which is about 30 mins from us my girlfriend and I (and 4 dogs and 5 kids) could have both 12 man tents set up, food tent set up and a 30 x 30 tarp set up over the top, kitchen set up, chairs, tables etc & kids fed repeatedly by lunchtime and had polished off at least two bottles of wine by the time the boys got out there after work. Not a bad effort I'd say for two glamour campers.
We have just graduated from an Oztrail Oddessy tent to a camper trailer and I am in heaven!!! :armsup
While the tent was great I had trouble with the zips being that they kept coming apart (teeth) and could only be zipped from the bottom to the top not the other way as the teeth would separate. Dont think I would buy Oztrail again.
Having the camper trailer I would say the biggest plus is when its raining or windy (which is definately ALWAYS when we set up our tent) we can't really tell as the tent used to be really noisy and the geopoles would bend horrendously in the wind so much so that when we were in bed (blow up mattresses im not missing either!!!) the tent would bend so far that it was touching our noses one night. Not my idea of fun AT ALL!!!
We have three human kids (16, 13 & 10) and one furry one (black lab aged 4) but he only comes camping when we go bush not to caravan parks.
I can last bush camping (feral style - no power and using camp shower) for about 3-4 days as I find a baseball cap, sunnies and full wine glass an ABSOLUTE neccessity.
As for caravan parks I always have the hairdryer, mirror and makeup packed and have had no trouble so far, all the amenity blocks have been adequate (hot shower & electricity). :+
You will have great fun. Our 13yo daughter is a whizz on the camera and we have some great photos of our trips but so far none of us all set up so I will have to get her to take some at Xmas and put them up when we get back.
Welcome.....

Hi Teabag
Note that you are Teabag (singular). Probably means that you are a connoisseur of fine teas...

Hi Kylie,
Have one of these tents myself. You don't need to put a tarp over the tent itself. Depending on how long you are staying at your campground depends on size of tarp. One of those 3m x 3m canopies are generally ok. For the size of the tent, you can use one room for your storage, there is also the awning that you use for cover as well. Put a tarp on the ground for this area, will prevent grass from coming in the tent.
Practice putting this tent up in your backyard, needs a couple of people to put it up. Make sure you cure the tent, once up in the backyard, hose it down.
