Caravan weights.

Postby Quartz » Sun Jul 19, 2009 9:56 pm

Hi, I'm new to the forums and although I've tried a few searches I can't find much info on caravan weights, I have a 1000kg towbar fitted and I would like to find a caravan/camper trailer/slide on under this weight. Any ideas from the knowledgeable? Any info appreciated. :)

The ability of the towbar is one issue, but the tongue weight is quite another.

Refer to the manufacturer's manual on the tongue weight allowed for your particular vehicle. When you know that, shop around for a suitable trailer which is inside this weight. The weight of an individual trailer can be roughly checked by using a bathroom scale under the jockey wheel.

Yeah, the vehicle has more than enough capability, I was wondering whether anyone has or knows of a lighter 'van or such.

there's a thing called the "Little Nipper" that I think starts out under 1000kg. Might be a few tiny vans that come under that but remember to add into your calculations the stuff you put in it. Most camper trailers would push that once loaded up for a trip.

You have a variety of weights and laws to meet (eg over 750kgs requires brakes on trailer) to stay legal and insured/insurable.

Cheers, Nige

Hi Quartz and WELCOME to the forum. You do not say where you are located which makes it a tad difficult to point you in a particular direction.

One that might suit your needs is the Adria and I have included their website for Brisbane which will give you some idea.

I would also recommend that you try the caravanners forums for more info as well.

Thank you Gypsylady, that is a top link, just what I was looking for as a reference to what is available. Coincidentally, I am in fact located in Brisbane! What are the odds! :)
