Coastal camping area NSW.. First trip since 2007!!!

Postby Woodsy » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:07 pm

It is the first time we have been camping since 2007.. FINALLY i say... haha...

The gf wants somewhere next to a beach etc but i am not really fussed. We live on the Central Coast of NSW and we don't want to travel too far away...2-3 hrs Max as we are going to be setting up around 3-5pm and i dont really want to set up in the dark.

We have been to Mungo Brush already and would like to try somewhere different. Not really wanting to stay at a caravan park etc.

Any ideas?

Josh

If you had a 4x4 you could of gone to stockton :booty

You could go to one mile beach, just below Nelsons bay. I've camped there before.

Josh,

Quality 'beach' campsites are very far in between in the best of situations.
On the Central Coast, there are not all that many I can think of, however have you considered Patonga ??
It's not a caravan park just a council run campground.
It gets VERY busy in peak times, but right now you should get a good chance of getting a spot without neighbours :?#
One one side you have Pittwater and the other a lagoon.
You used to have to call Gosford Council to book a site (very cheap), but I did hear they were looking to put on a full time caretaker, don't know if this happened, so best give Gosford Council a call anyway.

Other than that, we often just head down towards Narabeen 'Big 4' Caravan park, very nice, big lagoon and beach within 5 minute walk.

Hope it helps.....

Steve

If your prepared to travel a bit more, there's heaps of spots down here on the south coast. I think you gotta travel at least 4 hours to make the trip worth while. Otherwise it's like camping in your own backyard. I usually Leave at dawn, get where you need to by lunch, and setup.

We like Patonga mainly because it's a good spot for the kids. It does get really busy though, even on some weekends.
I was just reading on another post about Putty Beach in Bouddi National Park, the campground looks a lot smaller, so I presume it would be quieter?? Might be too close to home. Another one on my list is Sandbar at Smith's Lake, I think someone on here mentioned it a while ago.
There's another place I am trying to remember the name, my brother who lives in Port Stephens has been there, it's a bit north of PS.

we are literally 5-10 minutes drive from Patonga.. its abit to close to home.. We have found a place called Ferndale Park up at the foot of Barrington tops heres a link http://www.barringtons.com.au/ferndale/

It looks good and would make for a nice relaxing few days away.. Anyone been there?

hi josh

you could try crowdy bay np just south of port macquarie

http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/Natio ... x?id=N0009

it has two main camp grounds right on the beach (Diamond head main campground and rangers hq, kylies beach further on into the park)

both have toilets and cold showers the only downside is the fee's

Ferndale is a great spot. While you are there, take the time to visit Telegherry area. The turn off to it is just a few kilometers before Ferndale. There are a couple of great cammp grounds there and they are free.
