I'm after a couple of opinions of some of the shade cloth style tarp that can be used as ground covers under the tent. As a number of camping grounds now do not allow traditional tarps, they require this style so I was wondering which was the better style, which wouldn't let moisture and dirt through to the tent base as much? I've looked at the Oztrail UltraMesh tarps, how does this rate used for this ground cover purpose? It can be quite pricey? Thanks
I use Ultramesh in my annex....it also allows water through.
Personally I would not be using anything under the tent... I never use anything under my mum's tent when she comes camping with me....never have and have never had an issue and that tent is now about 9 years old. The floor is still in very good condition.
You can always rake the ground if you feel it needs it before erecting the tent. When packing up you can just wipe the floor over with an old towel/rag or if it is just dirt you can sweep it off with a broom.
The fact is...even if you did use a tarp under it you would still get moisture between the tarp and the tent floor if there was moisture about.
The worst day camping still beats the best day working
Thanks gypsylady, I think you may be right. There is no point buying it and using it if it allows water & dirt through. I guess the best option would be to use nothing and clean as I go when folding up.
We use shade cloth under our camper. The main reason is to protect the underside of the camper tent, it helps to take the point of any sticks and stones etc but it also keeps it reasonably clean, moisture still gets to it but thats not a problem.
Most camp grounds are insisting on shade cloth under tents to protect the grass. I know it sounds funny but I have noticed with our camper the grass is damaged less when shade cloth is there, must allow it to breath better. I prefer shade cloth than a tarp because any water that gets under the tent will drain but if its a tarp it will sit there.
Theres no need to buy fancy tarps or made up shade cloth just buy some 3.6 wide shade cloth and use that, folds up reasonably small and light.
