Camping with toddlers

Postby melster » Fri Dec 18, 2009 3:39 pm

Hi Everyone,

Well we have bought the whiz bang tent and now we are getting set to go on our first camping trip as a family.

We will set off on Boxing Day.

It will be my husband and I plus our 4 year old son and 18 month old daughter.

The 4 year old I am not worried about. It's the 18 month old I am having a nervous breakdown about!!!

How do people camp with toddlers???

My daughter will be sleeping in a port-a-cot so should I prepare myself for her day sleep to fall by the wayside?

Also ANY tips on camping with toddlers will be greatly appreciated. We are going to a place with no hot water and minimal creature comforts.

HELP!!!

She will have a ball experiencing and exploring all the new things to her
Our daughter is 3 in February and has been camping since around 10 months old.

How stressful your holiday is will depend on how adventurous she is.
Our little one wouldn't go out of our site the first couple of times we camped
but now she has little fear and has to be watched closely when roaming around the camp site.
Camping at Paradise Beach, she wanted to go to the beach weather we were going or not.

Don't forget to bring her favorite foods / toys / dummy and plenty of bribes to keep her close to camp.
Assuming she can't climb out of the porta cot, use it as a play pen during the day or bring an actual play pen.

It's not as stressful as you think.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I will certainly use the portacot as a playpen.

Have a look back through this folder Camping with Kids melster & you will possibly find a few good hints.

Where are you from and where are you going camping ?

We are going camping 26, 27 & 28th Dec somewhere within a couple of hours or so of Melbourne (still undecided)

BTW, You can put your location in your profile.

Our kids LOVE camping. We have been lucky in that they dont wander (we do still watch them like a hawk still!) and are happy to stay within the boundaries of our set up.

Be sure to take things along for the kids to do if it is raining or too windy or cold to play outside.

it will be fine, my only advice is to try and either find a shady spot to hide under or take a decent tarp setup if you have one, and something for the ground like a big picnic rug.

we've just booked our next camping trip for January and this will be the first camping trip for our twins (will be just 1yo) and our 2 year old, she's a camping veteran ;-)

the other piece of advice is take your parents if possible, great for actually having a break while your camping

You'll be fine just make sure they're warm enough at night and if napping during the day just check its not too hot in the tent. Keeping them amused/entertained during the day I found with ours their favourite toys on the rug worked pretty well. Its all a learning experience and you'll figure out what works best for you while camping. You'll be fine have a great holiday Merry Xmas :cheers
