Merrit plug for 3 way fridge.

Postby spinyeel » Thu Dec 24, 2009 11:53 am

I am wondering if a 3 way fridge can be plugged into a Merrit plug socket in my vehicle, without causing problems? I read somewhere that the fridge may draw too many amps. :?

Gday mate I have an old Finch 3 way, I put a merit plug on mine as it was always losing contact with the normal cig socket, it seems to work ok ,I havent had any probs when I've used it.

Fitted a 100 aH battery in a Cub Camper last weekend and his 3-way draws 8.9 Amps - changed wire over to 15 Amp capacity and off it went happy as ... However it does mean he can only travel for 6-7 hours without a charge up as his Aux is not connected to the tow vehicle yet ...

Thanks for the advice. :) I guess as long as my car is running, and I unplug the fridge during long stops,it should be fine.

Or - put it on gas when you stop ..that way it only draws minimum current from the battery for ignition and interior lights ..

worst part is that you need 140-160 watts of solar just to cover the power of the fridge !!

My 50 Litre Waeco draws 3.6 amps and is powered by a 100aH AGM connected to a roof mounted 140 watt solar panel - and that is just about OK ..

I will have 100 watt fold up solar kits very soon which would at least help you both ...

Spinyeel

A merrit plug is the way to go if you can change it over yourself or buy a lead to suit.

You could consider wiring the merrit socket to relay with an ignition power source to ensure that it only drawers current from the battery when they keys are on... Could save a flat starter battery.
