Preparing for my first camping trip

Postby GreekMuscle1 » Sun Jan 10, 2010 8:35 pm

Hi all,

I am really interested in camping in the near future, however, I have never been and have no experience or anyone that can help me.
I was wondering if any of you know of any good books that could help me.

I was thinking of starting by reading "camping for dummies"

thanks

Hi and WELCOME to the forum....

The best bit of advice I can give you is to spend your time going back and reading through the old threads on this forum....cheaper than you can buy any book and more 'real' info from people who actually get out there and do it.

Reading on here will generate ideas and questions and from there you can ask the questions.

Is there really a Camping for Dummies?

I'm with Gypsy, read the stuff on here - we are pretty good. You could also have a look around the internet. Take US based websites with a grain of salt - you don't need to take bear spray and a 'survival kit' with you.

Lots of us on here actually camp and are willing to share our experiences and sometimes hard learned lessons with you.

No just go back though the old theads....you'll see headings that will draw your attention....look at them.

Start with General Chit Chat and work on from there.....

Hi,

Planning for camping is exciting isn't it. reading previous forum entries is a good way to learn about other campers experiences.
When you are just starting to go camping it is a good idea to camp just a few hous from home and go for a long weekend or what ever suits you. Camping at a Holiday park or a campground with basic amenities make it easier for you also.

HAPPY CAMPING
Cheers Tina

Yes CPs or campgrounds with amenities is great for newbies...especially if one member is not quite as comfortable with the idea of camping. Also makes it a bit easier when camping with kids and requires less financial outlay initially.

It gives you time to build up the cache of camping gear.

im planning on starting at a caravan/camping park but eventually I want to camp out in the wild, living off the land for maybe a week...

do you guys think the best plan is to go out on a camping trip in a park and just work out how everything is done by experiencing it? Or should i read up about what I need now before I go?

thanks all

Read up a bit first...always a good start.

Don't know that I would want to be eating anything caught in wild these days....heaven knows what disease it might have.

Set your camp up in your back yard, spend a night see what you need. Try doing the same when rain is due.

There's an old thread on here somewhere that has a gear and equipment list - I imagine that would be a good place to start to see what you'll need to get you going.
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt - then it's bloody hilarious!

Setting up in the back yard is a great idea to start with or a nearby friends property if you know of one.

You need to sleep, sit, eat, drink, stay sheltered and probably most of all: relax. So plan to get the 1st five covered and no. 6 will be easy. I wouldn't go full on and max your credit card at BCF until you sample at least 2 trips. After that you'll definately have a good understanding of what's needed.
Find a couple of campers who maybe could maybe lend you some bedding or chairs so you don't blow heaps of money and figure out you hate it, which heaps of poor souls do!
I've never had to live off the land, but good luck with that......................................

Cheers and welcome

hi all,

i think I will have my first camp in my backyard (when I get a tent that is....has anyone got any tips on what to look for in a good tent?)

I don't really plan on brining chairs, ovens and other luxuries like that. Any food that I do bring will be canned and wont require cooking, and if i need to cook I can always make a campfire.

Has anyone had any experience living off the land for any period of time?

thanks again

ONLY if there are no fire bans will you be able to rely on this option.
