Help locating 12 foot ridge poles!

Postby Young Camping Family » Thu Jan 14, 2010 2:49 pm

I have a 12x18 tarp and after putting it up I have decided I need some sort of ridge pole (or spacer or whatever you want to call it - a tube that extends with a hole to go on the top of the poles at each end) to go across the middle to hold it taught. The only problem is I have tried Rays Outdoors and Aussie Disposals and their ones only go up to 10 foot.
Surely someone makes a 12 foot one? Where have others got theirs from?
Help - I need it for next week!

Sorry, Steve, the longest they stock is 10 foot - I tried there last week and got the sales guy to check.

I have located a supplier called Poles Apart, who do make a 12 foot square ridge pole, and after emailing them, they have quoted about $55 for the pole including a courier delivery... which is almost as much as the tarp itself! Might have to re-think this one... I don't want to spend more for the tarp (poles, pegs, ropes, etc) than I did for our whole tent.
I'm thinking the fact that they are square may be a contributing factor of the cost, because I don't think the round ones are that expensive - e.g. the 10 foot ones at Aussie were about $15!

The square ones are much better and definitely stronger hence the extra in cost. I have had mine for quite some time and yes it was expensive even then but IMO well worth the cost especially knowing they will out perform the round ones.

Could you not extend the 10 foot poles to 12 foot by using a screwed sleeve made out of conduit or something?

I just ordered a 12' slide pole from the same company - $38 delivered by courier. Much better :)
I don't understand why the shops wouldn't carry the 12' long poles? 12' is a standard tarp size (along with 8' and 10').
Now it just needs to be delivered by Thursday :?

One thing you might need to get are longer spike pieces (what ever they are called on the end of the pole). I found that the standard ones on poles aren't quiet long enough and don't leave a lot of room for the rope one through the square ridge poles.
