CARAVAN EXTENSION HOOK UP LEAD !!!

Postby SUNDOWNER » Sun Dec 09, 2007 12:12 am

G,Day

I have been to Bunnings today and purchased a 20mtr Caravan Extension Cable for the Electric hook up when we go camping which is rated 15amp and has the wider earth terminal as apposed to the 10amp thinner version.

Is this the correct lead to use for the majority of camp sites that have Electric hook ups for tents, if not is there an adaptor fitment to fit on the above lead if some parks are rated 10amps.

Dont relish the idea of having to constantly swap terminal ends when the needs arise.

Thanks in advance for any help, advice and tips.

hi Sundowner yes 15amp is correct however when I picked up my new trailer from Jayco they said I would need a 25amp plug and a 15amp socket if i wanted to connect to my home, I made 1 up they dont sell them they do supply a 15amp with the trailer though. here s a web page may help you

Hi sundowner, I went into bunnings yesterday and enquired about the extension lead, I was told the 15amp was for caravan use and the 10amp for tenting. I you use your electric goods when camping on the 15amp extension cable, you'll most likely loose some of your equipment if there's a problem. They said it could ruin you appliances.

Hi Carol

The last person to ask for advise is the salesman :)

The type of lead can not damage your equipment unless it has too small a current carrying capacity which could also be dangerous to the user.
The real problem is that the rules for tents caravans m/h say that for a plain extension lead "the lead SHALL have the same rated [size] plug on each end"
also "the plug & socket SHALL not have a higher rating than the cable"

Most powered sites at campgrounds & CPs are 15 amp.

Gab n Gee

You will have no dramas with a 10 amp lead.I only carry 10 ampers in my CT. Very few people would have 15 amp leads anyway.

Thanks for that. I didnt really want to go out and buy a new lead that I may not use again.

I should add that a bit of caution is required not to run high powered items all at once. Kettles and toasters can use around 7 amps each and small heaters on high around 10amps on their own. Items should have the amount of watts they use printed on them somewhere , divide this by 240 (voltage) and you have the amps used ( close enough anyway )

Brett, that is a bit of a misleading quote....ALL the people I know who have CTs and go to CPs have 15 amp leads.

In fact to be on the safe side Gab n Gee I would ring the CP and ask them....that way you will not get caught out.

I might price one up just to be safe. We are hoping to buy a CT down the track, so one might come in handy.

Thanks for all the great advice.

Yes it will but it will also be ILLEGAL and the last thing we want to be doing here on the forum is promoting illegal activities Brett.
