Hi from Wollongong

Postby Serenity Now » Sun Feb 14, 2010 11:43 pm

Hi to all,

Please allow me to introduce myself...

We are a family of 5 (3 great kids,11,9,and 8 ) and 1 gorgeous border collie cross.
Hubby and i have been camping for about 25 years.
We have done so much bush camping and also camped in a few caravan parks when the need arises.
I guess you could say we do love the serenity of the great outdoors and the bush.
However.....after camping twice last winter i noticed that i just didnt enjoy it as much...air matresses just aint agreeing with me anymore.
I have put it to hubby that i want to move on from the great ol' tent and invest in a camper trailer.
He isnt totally convinced as he has camped over half his life but here i am now a member of this site and it is so informative.
So thankyou to all for your great advice and info and i will see you round.
Cheers.

P.S I am still a bit confused with posting but i'm sure i will work it out with a few mistakes along the way.

Hi SN and WELCOME to the forum.

Here is a little suggestion....why not arrange to hire a camper for a weekend or 2 and introduce hubby that way. Keep it a secret and make it a big surprise for him.

Alternatively....get a better mattress and camp bed. A self inflating mattress on top of a camp bed is pretty comfy. Have a look back through some of the older threads here and you will see quite a bit written on this topic.

You have definitely come to the right place for info and support.....Cheers Gypsy.

Welcome aboard Serenity!

I've been coming to this forum for about 6 or 8 months and have learned so much about camper trailers v caravans and all the options. What's your current setup?

Thanks for your welcomes.

We camp using an 8 man tent, plenty of room inside, easy enough to put up.
We set up our cooking area on a table and away we go.

Hubby can fix an awesome tarp so whatever the weather we are rarely ever put off camping.
The cold will get me sometimes though.
We have the Illawarra camping and caravan show the first w/e of March and i plan to hire a CT in the April school hols and go from there.

Very exciting for you Dettie,i would love to hear what you think after you pick up your CT.

Will definitely keep you posted.

In my experience, the tent setup like yours is perfect for 4+ night stays but I think other setups are better for touring around the country. Have fun at that expo! I'm going to the Sydney one after the April school hols.

Thanks heaps for your welcomes.

I know this sounds a bit corney but it is a great site.
I went onto another site a bit ago and there was a bit of bagging about diff age groups and camping preferences.
I truely have not found this to be the case here.

I feel that we are here for the common cause which is SERENITY NOW :***

Your set up sounds fine, but i find air mattresses especially in winter VERy not suitable ,when sleeping on the tent floor I carry a piece of carpet and put a piece of foam (the one i have is one of those egg shell underlays) these will block out any cold air coming through..Lots of old posts on which sleep gear is the best...happy reading, certainly lots of info on here.

Once again welcome aboard..

I'm Dave, 29 going on 19, No wife or problems (kids), and I live just down near Shellharbour.. :)

There's a place out at Unanderra that hire's camper trailer's. They have a website, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. I think it was about $250 for a weekend, a bit more for public holidays..

What place's have you been to or plan on visiting?

Hey Dodgy dave from wollongong,

It would be great if you can think of the name of the CT hire out of Unanderra.

Johnnos CT are opening in Shellharbour and hire for $350 a wk.
I thought that was pretty good.

We have been camping a lot at the upper colo Reserve mainly to catch up with friends from Newcastle but i want to go and explore out near Lithgow and later this yr i want to camp at the Warrumbungles.

Cheers

I've printed out a camping checklist they have on the site, but for the life of me I can't find it..

Illawarra camper trailer hire seems to ring a bell, but it's not coming up with the googeling. I know there's a caravan sales yard right next to the train station, but unsure if it's it.

There's also a place around the corner from me, but he mainly repairs and modifies caravans / trailers. He's called RJ's Caravan repairs in Sunset Ave Warilla, Perhaps he can point you in the right direction.
