Camp guides/books

Postby TheOtherLeft » Mon Mar 29, 2010 11:39 am

Hiya all,

I'm after a camp guide/book and have noticed Camps 5 gets the rave reviews.

Given it's a little pricey at approx $80 for the bigger version with CampSnaps I was wondering if there are any alternative books that has the same level of quality/detail?

Thanks all,
Ben

The Camps 5 is the most comprehensive publication out there. Go for the basic one, it is much cheaper and definitely well worth the cost. The snaps are nice to have but not a necessity.

If you belong to an auto club you can purchase it through them for a discounted price.

I recently bought 2 of the Gregories brand NP guides... they're pretty good.

I bought a Camps 5 but gave it to my friendly camping neighbours who fed me one night on my way back from picking up the CT in Brissie, so will get another copy eventually.

I have Camps 4 and Camping in Australia, which is a combination of the Boiling Billing individual state camping books + maps + details on national parks. I find these books compliment each other quite well.

I have some version of CAW and a fair collection of the Boiling Billy stuff. I spoke to Craig Savage and Cathy Lewis from Boiling Billy at the Queanbeyan 4WD Spectacular and he told me that they will be publishing a new camping and map book about mid year. It will be a single book combining the content from their state camping books.

As he explained it the new publication will be an alternative to CAW, or quite complimentary to it, as Craig and Cathy have, in their previous books, steered away from including the roadside rest stop campsites that tend to feature in CAW.

I like to support Craig and Cathy's 'work' as they do drive the tracks in their 4WD books and they either stay at or visit the campsites in their camping books. Add into the equation they are really nice folks! (If I am honest I really dislike that they drive about in a 4WD, go camping and get to call it work!)

We bought camps 4 about 4 years ago, we used it Maybe once.
I have Boiling Billy for NSW, Vict and South Australia, we use them very often.
Maybe, we are more inclined to set up in the areas, covered by the B B publications, usually more Parks Victoria type places.
If I was Touring full time I would grab the New Camps, but of little use to us at this time.
