Tents: those velcro straps to attach fly to poles

Postby Lin » Tue Apr 20, 2010 10:06 am

Do you always fasten them? I used to with my Coleman. But always thought that was the most annoying part of setting up the tent. You have to crawl under the fly to get to them and it's awkward.

Now I use my Blackwolf, it has 5 poles instead of 3 and that means 30 velcro straps! The other day when I set up my tent, I was so relaxed that I completely forgot about them. Only remembered I skipped that step hours later. But I don't think it made much of a difference?

I only use them in windy conditions or wet weather as they help to keep the fly from touching in the inner shell.

I have NFI what your talking about?

My tent the poles thread through the fly and the "tent" hangs off the inside of the fly with elastic hooks. Great for setting up in wet weather as the tent isnt subject to the wet at all

Sounds great Komodo. I remember my sister had a tent like that with 2 "sleeping compartments" that hung from the poles.

My tent is the oldfashioned system where the poles go through the sleeves of the inner tent, then you throw the fly over. You can then attach the velcro straps on the inside of the fly to the poles. Or not.

Dunno about "oldfashioned system" ... our new Coleman Montana is set-up the same. Thread the poles through sleeves on the inner tent, throw the fly over, then attach the velcro thingies under the fly to the inner poles.

As the tent is new (and perhaps we're perfectionists!) we're currently attaching ALL velcro thingies, though I think with time it might get less and less :)

We attach ours...if we remember to do them! :)
We usually remember them as soon as the wind picks up and are double checking that everything is secured!

When I camped with my oztrail tent, I used to do some of the velcro sometimes and not others. Depended on the weather. Also, I tended to do the corner ones, particularly near the opening to help with stabilisation.
