NSW Winter Camping - are we crazy? Hoping for tips/ideas

Postby sassenach.girl » Wed May 05, 2010 2:28 pm

Hi folks,

Leave is approved, so we're off for a 2.5 week camping trip in August. Planned itinerary is:

Brisbane > Goondiwindi (2) > Narrabri (2) > Dubbo (4) > Tamworth (3) > Port Macquarie (2) > Coffs Harbour (2) > Iluka (2) > Home.

Q1. Are we crazy tent camping in (late) Winter? During the day will be lovely I think, though overnights could get into the sub zero range. Any tips for keeping us and the little ones (3+5) warm? I think we will need winter sleeping bags (already have self-inflating mattresses) but anything else?

Q2. Any pointers/suggestions for things to do with two little ones in those areas? (Only confirmed plans is 2 days at Dubbo Zoo for 5 year old birthday)

Thanks in advance
Sass.

Have a look here Kylie & no I for one don't think you are crazy. I reckon winter is the best time to camp.

There is lots already written on this forum so use the 'search' function to have a look.

This is just one topic on the subject: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=2503&hilit=+winter+camping+tips

Best overall tip is THERMALS....

Some of my best camping trips have been in the winter. Just make sure you keep you tent zipped up tight so your clothes bedding doesn't get damp and bring a lot of warm clothes.

That's a great circuit you're planning.
Plenty of interesting places and changing scenery.
Bring a couple of doonas and all should be well.
Don't expect to have an early wake up either.. wait for the frost to thaw..

We have just recently invested in Roman Flight 1000 Advance sleeping bags.
They are rated -10.
Haven't got them yet.

Should go a long way to keeping us warm.

For the kids AND you Lycra long sleeve shirts..yes those swimming shirts..i discovered lycra when i was a fit freak and push bike rode distances in winter,i made a body suit out of it and it was fantastic to block the cold wind out.And layers. Lycra a tshirt or two then a jumper..warm as toast.Hot water bottles to sleep with..i am camping june long weekend up the mountains,it will be cold..and of course a big tarp to cover your set up to keep dry.
By the way great trip..i have seen snow on Mt Kaputar in winter.
The Lord is my shepard,i shall not want......only sometimes.

No, not unless you are always going to be on a powered site. Hot water bottles and thermal unders AND insulate under your mattress and on top of it if you are using an air mattress. A self inflater will not require the same amount of insulation.

Just found a 50% off price for some Oztrail hooded sleeping bags for the 4 of us, rated to -5c. Will have a look at BigW and the like this weekend for some thermals ...

And yes, we will be on powered sites for the entire trip.

Looove camping in winter. :+

Just have a really good sleeping bag. We have a Roman -10 opened as a doona on our bed in the CT and with a feather doona over the top and we sleep in our trackkies!!!

Our heater is the campfire and we go from the campfire into bed so we dont need heaters.

And thermals are great and like PJ said with the lycra but now they are called skins PJ, mainly based towards sports people as our son wears them in winter when he plays golf but we can wear them too!!!

I'm a powered site girl and invested in one of those teeny hot air blowing heaters - $14 at KMart.

Best invention ever. :?#
