Good morning!

I've been lurking for a week now, reading up while I am planning my first camping trip, and thought I should introduce myself!

My family and I are going on our first camping trip in a couple of weeks. It is just for two nights over the weekend but with two adults and three children (5, 6 and 11yo boys) it is a bit of a mission! We have gone hiking regularly for the last few months and they love it once they are out of the house, so camping seems like a good idea!

My biggest concern is that I can't lock the tent! lol We will be gone hiking for most of the day so the camp will stay set up (we are in a caravan park as the NP camping grounds are only open in the school holidays) and although I will make sure any valuables are in the car, I can't help wondering if I need to worry about anyone flogging my tarp poles or gas cooker or esky!

OH, and my favourite thread is the 'show us your campsite' thread - hopefully I will have a picture to add to the thread in a few weeks time!

The information here has been invaluable!

For starters I have an awesome huge tarp to go over my tent, I have shade cloth for under it, and now have hot water bottles on my 'to buy' list!

Hi and welcome!

You hear of stuff being stolen but it's pretty rare. Only reason an esky would get stolen (unless it's a fancy Engel, etc) would be for any grog that might be in it. We leave chairs out, towels drying, etc to look like you're not far away. Don't leave anything valuable visible in a car (and don't put it in the boot then walk away... use stealth to put them away earlier), cause that will mean you end up with a broken window as well if someone decides to have a closer look.

Tarp...shade cloth....Yep,,,,We will get on fine....lol

Jeni,,,We have only ever lost ''1'' thing from our camping trips and guess what....
I SWORE, BLAMED, ACCUSED...etc....Then got home and found that I hadn't even packed it...(My brand new Metal Detector)...few 'Sorries' were in order......
As a rule I believe that you will never find a better bunch of people than campers....(pretty honest as well...lol)

Hi jeni99,

Welcome to the forum.

I don't particulary worry too much about theft around the campsite,i take the routine precautions of keeping some things out of sight.
i have never had anything stolen whilst camping.

I would usually lock my valuables in the car and then hide the car keys in maybe the billy and Hubby and i often laugh and say that no-one would ever look there.

The only time we have had anything stolen were our fishing rods in a caravan park when we were staying in the cabins.

Its my handbag/purse/wallet that i am cautious about.

When we leave our car away from the campsite to go hiking i make sure that there is not anything valuable in the car. This is when i take my wallet with me.

Have a great time camping.

Okay, I think I have it..

No. 1 Protect the alcohol at all costs.
No. 2 Keep money and keys safe in case you need to purchase more alcohol
No. 3 If in doubt, consume all alcohol.

:cheers
