LED lantern in sections

Postby Hippie » Thu Aug 26, 2010 9:30 pm

I have seen someone using a LED lantern that has sections like an orange (not that many sections of course). The idea is that when intact it omits light all around like a standard lantern. The bonus, when someone wants to go to the loo, they break off a section to take with them. I can't seem to find them anywhere for sale. Does anyone know where I can get one? Cheers, Hippie

I would think you are talking about the Coleman Quad Lantern, we have one and it is brilliant for the kids they love it. Any Anaconda store will stock them $129 but if you can hold off and wait for a sale like me you will pick it up for $89. They run on 8 D cell batteries which also recharge the detachable quads brilliant idea and works really well

Hi Hippie,

I had one of those in my hand just the other day at Kangaroo Tent City Camping at North Parramatta.
Didn't buy it but it looked a great idea.

Would be interested how good and effective they are,if you buy one it would be great to know what you think.

Rechargeable batteries turned out to be a right pain in the fundament. The cost of the charger - $30+ - charging time around 7+ hours. Bought a battery tester and that was a good investment ... the charger does not charge the re-chargeables to totally full. Plus (and this is the biggy for me) the new re-chargeable batteries seem to need to be cycled like you would cycle the batteries in a mobile phone or computer. I mean charge-discharge-charge-discharge etc. That takes time and record-keeping and fiddling. Then I found, the remote control I was using them in was dying every 2 weeks because the batteries became less effective so quickly against the bought batteries. The crowing moment before I gave the charger and batteries to someone else, was when the smoke alarm started yowling at 2am and wouldn't shut up. At the time I had a broken arm and couldn't get up a ladder to get the thing out. I got someone to come and sort it but it was a total pain. Subsequently I got a wired-in smoke alarm with a 5-year battery. Anyway ... for my money, and for all the batteries I use (few) the off-the-shelf ones do a way better job.

Looked at the Coleman light you are talking about but was put off by the D batteries.

The three lights we have now are all 240V rechargable which is easier as when we get home we plug them all in and charge them up ready for the next camping trip.

Our kids have some of those little LED round lights that you can press on & off and are also magnetic which they take to the loo and they are about the size of the bottom of a coffee cup and throw plenty of light. Also use them in the CT above our bed.

Thanks for all the replies. Has given me quite alot to think about. The last thing I want to be doing in fussing around with batteries all the time so will do I little more research.

Is this the one?

I had a look at it and decided against it because it's quite expensive for what it is, and bought a Darcy branded LED lantern instead.

Two of these for the kids to use:

We also use the little magnetic led lights as I mentioned in an earlier post.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the links xmasbaby. There were very helpful. I like the sound of the little magnetic ones. I am really glad I posted this item on the forum. I may have saved myself from a bad decision. :?#
