I have the exact same awning as shown in the image in your post (from IronMan) and found it very useful during a recent trip to the outback. I chose this particular awning because it suited my SWB Pajero. It is 2 m along the car and comes out 2.5 m from the car. If you have a long car then I think ARB have one that is 2.5 m along the car and comes out 2 m. Once you get the hang of putting it up its not too hard but it is bulky and a bit hard to handle. This is magnified if there is any wind around.
From memory it cost about $300 and then a little bit more to get it fitted to my roof racks.

How do they go in the rain? It looks like they'd fill up with water and collapse? I guess if they were pretty tight they'd be right. I wouldn't mind getting one too.

There are three velcro loops either side to tighten the material and then as titch said you can drop one corner. I've never had it setup in heavy rain, just a very quick, light shower and didn't notice any pooling.

I'm more worried about it if the wind is blowing a gale. I normally tie it down if there is any hint of a breeze as it has quite a large sail area.

That's the awening that I'd like to buy, reasonably priced and well, the ARB & TJM ones are pretty much the same quality, I've actually been told that they come out of the same factory, The only main difference is the price tag.

I have been thinking of doing a cheap mock up with just a simple silver tarp, poles and PVC pipe.
Cut a slit along the pipe, drill a hole in the end caps and have a rod going through the middle poking out each side, screw the tarp onto the middle rod and on one side you can make a handle to wind it in. A split pin would stop the rod from going right through.

A little bit like this....

Like your thinking Dave, We have bought 3.5 mtrs of zip today ,Von is sewing ours up.
Will be in a bag ,manual roll up with a stiffener in the edge, around 2.5 wide and around 4 mtr long.
Shall be a drop after 2.5, 2 poles and a center joiner pole.
That's the plan anyways.
