CAn any one please let me know of some great cheap or free camp sites anywhere in Australia. It's fine if they are accessible only by 4WD.

Australia is full of free camping sites but you need to be more specific, its a big country.
Tell us your planned route.

As Titch says...Aussies a pretty big place....
I'd suggest you invest in a copy of ''Camps Australia Wide'' (prev, the ''snaps'' edition...little more expensive...but easy to justify the extra when you have one).....In there you will find info advising you of freedom camping areas,,,and...budget camps available.
The word ''FREE''...is almost out of the campers vocab now days,,,,especially close to towns. (they are there though....but harder to find nowdays)

Has over 400 free and low cost camps listed
Camps Australia Wide book (as already mentioned) is a great resource to have.

Most of the National Parks, State Parks, have cheap or free camping.
In Victoria you can camp in State Forests for free.
Some towns have low cost camping at their show grounds.
Really depends on what facilities you need as to whether they are suitable for you needs.

If you give a more specific area or route you are taking people here can give you more specific camps.
Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations.

:hello: Welcome to the forum Bianca!!!

Like the boys said you need to be a little more specific, even narrow it down to state and what route you are planning so we can be more specific as there are a huge amount of sites.

The sources already mentioned are all really good points to start from.

A heap of good people here eager to answer all your questions. :+ :+ with a bit of comedy on the side... :***

Just realized that you are from Townsville.....one of the nicest camping areas you can get...theres heaps of spots if you prefer to go ''outback'' up around there,,,,for you....definitly get the Camps Australia'..snaps edition.
This time last year I was staying up there and found a nice park to camp in (in my poptop camper)...and couldn't work out why no one else camped there,,,it turned out that the croc's lived down the bank by the creek/river and came up into the park at night to sleep...nearly pood myself when I heard this,,,funny part is,,,I never saw one while I was there
