Bed Fly sides homemade and proud of it!!

Postby Chicky Babe » Thu Dec 09, 2010 12:09 am

Pretty excited...am making up shadecloth sides to go on my existing canvas bedflys on my camper.

Got blue shadecloth from Bunnings, measured the sides up...a bit tricky...I was very mathematical (not)..used velcro I already had...used a tape measure for the width of hems :*** :*** that was so ingenious..pinned it just like sewing curtains, sewed it all up on my "Janome" and voila...IT ACTUALLY WORKED!!! Only trouble I had was finding UV resistant thread, which I still haven't got but used a strong thread on a long stitch just to keep it together until I get the proper stuff. I wanted to make sure it worked first!!! Then I remembered I had some UV thread in my garage so am off down there tomorrow to find it and finish the job.

1 down and 3 to go!!

I reckon it will cost me approx $68 all up rather than $320 for new ones (includes the actual fly and bagged) but camper is under cover and I have rolled up the flys and kept them attached to the camper for easy set up. I will detach the sides (which is why I velcroed) and store them in the camper. Will only use them in summer and for privacy. So once I have sewed up with UV thread tomorrow I will post the photo of it attached.
I was pretty stoked...didn't have to unpick anything...hoping the canvas won't be too hard to do! I love making things for the camper...so satisfying!

Talk to you tomorrow :?#

Nice one, chickybabe.
Looking forward to pics of your handy work.
My mum did something similar for her campervan except (wind up the middle and pull out the bed ends) on a bigger scale cos she bought a piece of blue shadecloth to run the length of the van. It reduces the glare marvellously. And it's long enough to cover a car parked beside it, too.

Gypsy
Privacy and shade. The way the van is facing at the moment we don't need it along the side so it's around the front side cos that's facing west.

Easy CB...just go to the UPLOAD ATTACHMENT button at the bottom of the text box.

Choose BROWSE and find the pic on your PC.....and then ADD FILE. Submit as per normal.

Do make sure you reduce the size of the pic first.......to make it forum friendly. If you need any assistance with this let me know.
