Hey Rosco, Aboriginals used to cut or scar a tree for several different reasons. Mainly used as markers for burial places and Sacred places. Those scarred trees in the enclosure would have been taken in from the forests probably due to fires, floods or whatever to save them for future generations. They would usually have a story to go with them. Some trees are carved (some quite elaborately) and have been cut down and sent to Melbourne museum in days gone by to save them from bushfires etc. Aboriginal people are reclaiming those trees and storing them in Land Council buildings etc.
Just a bit of information I learned since working in an Aboriginal Land Council Office.
