Second camp-out with out trailer, and ...

.. I'd say, 86% success! :?#

We headed out to Noosa Caravan Park with our Marlin Camping OzTrail 12 camper trailer, which we used once before, around 4 months ago. (Weather and small kids have made camping hard, here in Brisbane).

We left Brisbane on Thursday mid afternoon, and ended up getting to the site at around 3. The owners told us they would reserve a nice big spot for the OzTrail 12 trailer and tent. However, they all seemed the same size. SMALL!

I am not a reversing specialist, but I got the trailer into place on the 2nd attempt, but then found that we needed to switch it around. The only option was to have the trailer on the slab, and the tent out to the gravel/grass side. The tent was actually too wide, and was pushed up against the palm trees which devide the sites... And we had a MASSIVE caravan to the right, and a smaller one to the left. Very cramped, even the small caravan people were not impressed.

Anyway, setup went OK... better than the first time. Success...

We have a 1 year old, a 3 year old and a 5 year old. - All had a ball, but it got chilly at night, and the youngest was awake a lot. Also, last night, the last night, I woke up at 01h00, went to the 'tv room', which is really a no-walled place with a roof, and a TV in a corner. It was around 10 degrees... and I was all alone, until 03h00 watching Australia vs South Africa. (Great game, by the way).

So I was/am shattered.

We probably won't visit the same park again, as it was mainly large caravans, and very small sites. Not much freedom, and very cramped.

But pleased we got out second trip done.

Looking for a more camper trailer friendly next .. same sort of area.

Good to hear that overall it was a good camp Mac.

Now first thing.......always take hot water bottles or extra warm clothing, thermal unders and more warm bedding at this time of year and always insulate under the mattress and on top of it as well.

You can take the covers off but you cannot add them if you do not have them.

Next thing is to look for campgrounds as opposed to CPs or see if you can get a powered site in the camping or grassed area of the CP.

CP are generally set up for caravans or motorhomes.....not CTs and the majority of CP owners have no real concept of how at CT works.

I have tried to explain that I need an area to peg down only to arrive and find they have set aside a concrete slab for me....like I said....no idea!!

Not so bad now that I have a hard floor CT but in the past it was a nightmare more times than not.

Thanks GypsyLady!

Agreed - I need to find more of a camp site type place. Problem is - finding one... We're thinking of going south of Brisbane for the next visit... so, somewhere North of Tweedheads, and South of Brisbane.

Now, insulation for a bed? Can you maybe advise? We were OK up on the top bed, and actually, I don't feel the cold. I was in shorts the whole time, while my wife had around 7 layers on. :) But if there was a way to help the kids... that would be good. They are on inflatable mattresses, with the 1 year old in a travel cot. Is there a way to keep them a bit warmer? The 5 year old has a sleeping bag, and seemed OK. The 3 year old wasn't keen on a bag, so used a few duvets... but when I tested it, I could feel the bed was cold.

And any advice on a suitable site would be amazing, :)

Again I say INSULATION Mac and one of the best forms is a old woolen blanket or similar. This also applies to the airbeds for the kids.

And I reiterate......hot water bottles, preferably with covers. Make the bed warm before they get into it.

Socks, beanies, gloves are all good too.

Gypsy put us onto hot water bottles last year and they work a treat and our girls (13 & 16) love theirs.

I got them from Aldi and they come with a fluffy cover which again the girls loved.

I filled them up and put them in their swags before they went to bed and they loved it. They also slept with them too.

I also put one of those yoga matts underneath our girls swags to stop the cold. Last year we camped in -6 degrees without them complaining!!!! :?# They really loved shining their LED lights onto the roof of the camper to see the sparkly icy display (this was before we started putting a tarp over the CT roof)

Glad to hear you had a great time.

We have a 12ft CT and we haven't had any trouble with enough room in CPs so far but I have always booked a grassed powered site and it's always been in NSW so not sure how it is in QLD.

Looking forward to hearing how your next trip goes. :+
