Patonga Camping Ground

Patonga Camping Ground

Wondering whether anyone's stayed here and if so, is it nice (and not packed in like sardines in a can) for a weekend get-away from Sydney?

Have stayed there a few times and is always busy but never had a problem with noise etc. Good facilities that are kept clean.

I think that the sites backing on to the beach are the best as they are less congested and have some trees etc for shade.

Great place for the kids, with the river, beach and playground.

There is a nice pub 5 minutes walk down the road, but beware the fish and chip shop has very strange and short opening times.

We stayed here a couple of years ago as our first ever camping trip with our kids, as it is very close to home. It was very busy and the campsites weren't very big but the amenities were great. There is a playground for the younger kids and a basketball hoop and tennis courts. My kids went spotlighting at night and found lots of creatures.

The kids loved floating down the river with the tide until it hit the beach. Just be careful of diving in near the rocks as one of my daughters split her hand open on an oyster shell on the first morning we were there!! Woy Woy hospital take kids on an emergency basis and they had her stitched up and with a plastic bag over her hand continued on floating in the water.

And yes the fish and chip shop shuts around 6pm so get in early!!

Thanks guys for the review! And Toucan, thanks for the warning... ouch!

Floating down the river sounds like a lot of fun! I'll probably get one of those big inflatable tubes that you normally tow behind a boat, so that'll be a lot of fun.

It sounds like a perfect spot for a weekend get away. Cool! Thanks again.

I fish from a boat in the mouth of the Hawksbury and know Patonga well.
Lovely place to camp and the tidal lagoon in beaut, just don't go floating out of the river into the open, is a favourite place for Bull Sharks

Hi there

About 18 months ago, we spent the weekend at Umina. On the Sat arvo we drove to Patonga to scope it out. It was quite nice although it appeared cramped. The sites appeared small but this was our impression based on a cruise around the park.

FYI. Along the road into Patonga from Umina, there's a walk to a lookout over the Hawkesbury river entrance, Barrenjoey and Pittwater. Suggest you check out the NPWS site for details.

We have been going to Patonga for the last 24 years, it's really a great place for kids, our grandchildren are now camping at Patonga.

Camping on the beach side can be a bit of a problem when the wind comes up, we camped last Chriistmas one week on the beach side and 1 week on the creek, we just about lost out whole site due to wind coming off the ocean on teh beach site.

Christmas time you have to wait for someone to die to get a site and I would say the same thing for Easter.

Cheers

Patonga is only 10 minutes from me, been there alot over the last 2 weeks as i take my motorbike there for test rides after i make changes to it. It does get pretty busy and the camp sites are small, but as people have said it has alot to offer. Next time i'm there i'll try and get some photos if you want?
