Trying to decide.....

Postby Rosco1 » Thu Sep 22, 2011 2:35 am

Well,,,,Its time to start planning our holiday for next year...
We have decided to put in from the 2nd of May....untill....5th of June and travel from Brisbane up to around Cairns / Port Douglas....on the coastal road....Then,,,maybe,,,work our way over to Darwin and back down the middle.
We were going to hire another Motorhome but because we can't find a company that will let us take Bailie we will probably buy a Caravan fairly soon so that we can kit it out to freedom camp as often as possible....

Has anyone done a similar trip ???...if so....How long did it take you ????...Was 4 weeks nearly enough to cover that distance ????.......and see what you intended (we would like to also spend some time in the Daintree area while up that way as well)....

Any ''''Must Stops'' ?????

We can change our plans to do just the coast upto Port Douglas and make the Darwin trip next time .

Being me.....I don't usually book in anywhere and play it by ear....i.e. if theres no room...who cares....we will travel on & free camp.....Picking that the area will also be infested with Southern Nomads at that time of the year so accomodation in Camping grounds will be scarse...

:*** :beer :***
Cheers

Rosco

Back down the middle to where??
.......I'll pretend that you have got your blonde wig on Gypsy.....

BACK TO BRISBANE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before we head off....I will have the distance etc worked out......I was sorta hoping that someone else may have done the ''holiday mode trip''...from BRIS...TO CAIRNS.....& Approx how long they spent doing it...
I realize that we may have different interests but as a rule ''what goes round''....it can only ever be an approximation.....after talking to the mother-in-law....it sounds as though there is more than enough to see & do....just by going Brisbane ..to..Port Douglas...return to Brisbane

Once we start a list of the places we want to visit...that will give me more idea how to budget days etc

:cheers :cheers

One could do this trip in 2 weeks or one could take 3 months and probably still miss a lot of stuff. Certainly 4 weeks will give you a bit of a bite of the cherry but again it depends on how much and what you want to see.

IMO I would take your 4 weeks and just head out, stop when you want to stop, stay as long where and when you want to and basically work it out from there.

If you find that you have spent too much time traveling north and not have reached Cairns, you may just have to rethink your return journey and/or not go as far north as you might like.

On the other hand you can plan 2 weeks traveling north and 2 weeks traveling south to home via an inland route and just fit in what you can along the way......make it what I call a 'snapshot' trip.

Alternatively, you can spend 3 weeks traveling up taking a bit of time and then make it a shorter return journey home. Even if you spend your 4 weeks traveling up the coastal road and returning via the coastal road you still will not see it all.

You guys don't know how ''touch & go'' it was wether or not to do this trip for our break.....
It was up against.....

A, three Week cruise,,,,,,,,,or.......Another trip to NZ

The cruise blew them away when it came down to costings.....So cheap and nothing else to pay.....other than for grog.

Even NZ is so much cheaper to visit than touring around Aussie...with that trip the exchange rate was certainly in its favour......as was spending aboard a cruise ship......duty free (cheap booze PJ)....

Anyway....we decided on a trip upstairs as we haven't been there before....other than driving through. from Cairns to Brisbane when we bought the bus from up there...this time we will have a better look around.

I think any booze tastes the same from a bottle or a glass or a teacup for that matter.

Great decision Rosco!!!!! Really looking forward to reading your trip reports every day that you are away......
