Camping trip from Bris to Syd Via New England

Postby Adam R » Thu Jan 12, 2012 11:55 am

Hi,

My wife and I are travelling down to Sydney from Brisbane via the New England Highway and Putty Rd. We are looking for the best place to Camp along the Putty Rd (Preferably along the Colo River) that can serve as a base to go on bushwalks through the national park there. Our only request is that the campsite has nice amenities. Where are the good bush walks situated along the putty rd?

Also we will spend the night in Tenterfield before heading south along the NE. Where would be the best place to stay a night to break up the drive from Tenterfield to Colo River.

And any recoomendations on where to stay and what to do in Katoomba as we will spend a few nights there.

Also I should mention this is out first time camping!

Thanks for the help guys.

You could try the Upper Colo Reserve http://www.hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au/community/parks-and-recreation/upper-colo-camping I have not camped there but my wife & i took a drive out there for a picnic one day (and it poured down with torrential rain).

It is fairly basic with cold showers & I would suggest you bring your own water too.

As for Katoomba, that is my neighbourhood! if you want to do the touristy stuff jump on a double decker bus at Katoomba & take the tour around Katoomba/Leura, you can jump on & off all day, I did it recently with just me & 5 kids (my 4 kids & my wifes son) they loved it!

It is a little expensive ($90 for a family pass) but if you want to see a lot in a day its the way to go.

If you don't want to be mobbed by tourists then you can find some nice bushwalks further down the hill at Lawson or Hazelbrook (my hometown)

Tenterfield has a couple of caravan parks in the town itself or around 10 kilometeres out of town you have camping areas such as Bald Rock and a bit further on Boonoo Boonoo. Haven`t been in a while but Bald Rock is a main camping ground toilets but weren`t showers when i was there and Boonoo Boonoo is more bush camping.
The Lord is my shepard,i shall not want......only sometimes.
