Why do you want to run a 3way fridge off solar?

You would need BIG panels to run a 3 way. Run it off gas

Or if looking to buy a fridge get a DC fridge to run off solar

solar question

Postby dazsteve » Wed Mar 21, 2007 11:44 am

Thanks for that..We have a dual battery and gas and I was posing the question to see whether it was necsassary and I thiught if it was small and cheap we could run our fridge half time on solar half on gas....Perhaps not necessary..We are going around Aus for 5 months and have a big car fridge 80 l I think, and the jayco fridge and I was strarting to think of perhaps making the most off the sun...maybe just to power night lights in van..Steve thinks I am mad but typical me just wanted to see , I know I will get a -told you so,. but at least I will know I asked around..Thanks for the reply We have probably got enough back up with batteries and gas.......He now wants a little pee wee bike ..do you want to side with me on that or do you think that is great idea too.
Must go thanks again

Meh pee wee bike - tell him to get a big bike!

To run just the 80litre (assuming its a Waeco) will require nearly 2 x 80 panels.

IMO you are better to just drive the car for 20minutes - 1 hour every day this will charge the battery better than the solar would. For the gas fridge probably 3 panels would be required.

Collyn Rivers book on solar or caravan electrics would be a good investment.

A single solar panel would be enough to keep the battery charged up to run the lights especially if they are flouros or LEDs, a solar panel would only be good for this if you pull up for long periods of time otherwise as said just charge them with the car. Another option might be buy yourself a cheap $150 generator and a battery charger incase you get yourselves in a pinch and need some batteries charged then and there.
