Whats your Campers Ball Weight ?

Postby mr_grumble » Tue May 15, 2007 8:09 pm

Hey guys, Im fiddling with equipment placement on my camper to achieve the best mix of practicality and minimum ball weight.
Currently Im looking at approx 40kg at the ball, more than I wanted but I just can't have my cake and eat it too :(
The tow vehicle (Pajero) with its current towing configuration has a max ball weight of 100kg and I really would like to know what the norm range in ball weights in campers are.

Cheers,
Steve

40kg is a pretty good (prehaps even a little on the light side) of a good ball weight.
You wnat to make sure that the live load isnt lifting the rear of the vehicle and causing it to fishtail. As long as your withing the manufacturers specs for the vehicle ball weight and your not putting too much weight behind the axle you should be good IMO.

most recommendations state around 10% of trailer weight... so your's sounds light on, unless your camper is super lightweight too!

what's your desire for minimal ball-weight based on?

I usually find, at least wih lighter loads, that if I balance things up with just a bit more weight on the front, things just feel better, the vehicle drives like it should.
10% sounds like a reasonable target :armsup

yeah, with lighter loads it doesn't seem to matter. Who ever worries about ball weight on a 6x4 trailer when taking something to the tip! But when you start getting up in weight (as a percentage of your tow tug) you are probably best to make sure it's 'right' (whatever that may be)

Ball weight

My tow bar was just fitted and it has a ball weight of 250Kg. Apparently that is a lot. More than I will ever use.

We tow a boat with all the camping stuff, fishing gear, surfboards etc loaded in it weighs 1458kg, poor old Kia pulls it ok though. Our ball weight is 3500kg, I'd be happy with 40kg.

I would doubt your ball weight was 3500kg more likely your braked towing capacity is 3500kg

Your max ball weight is probably more like 250 - 350kg

unless it's a truck (do Kia make them?), it ain't going to be a tow capacity of 3500kg either... need a Troopy or similar for that!
